about

The "Purple & Gold" EP is a collection of tracks by Houston duo Dirty & Nasty, re-imagined and remixed by producer That Purple Bastard. Featuring prominent rappers Hollywood Floss, Mic Skills, John Dew, & Khama, The “Purple & Gold” EP explores the themes of legacy and martyrdom over southern psychedelic funk beats.

“…Upon re-mastering the tracks this last week (& completely re-doing my remix of the song Fool's Gold), I sought to really meditate upon the music, it's messages, themes, overall tone and sonic qualities, and how I really felt listening to it. Between you guy's astute social commentary and strong sense of irony and my decision to use almost exclusively DJ Screw samples, I came to the conclusion that we had a very dark little EP on our hands, both criticizing and celebrating the Houston we all grew up in and have a love/hate relationship with to this day. I also remembered something that D had posted on Facebook on June 27th questioning the idea of celebrating that day when most of our musical heroes had died as a result of the culture. I also thought about the name Purple & Gold and what else it might be made to represent besides an amalgamation of our various names/projects. Then I came up with the idea of using the two largest patron saints of the Houston underground: DJ Screw & Fat Pat and depicting their deaths in a dramatic style reminiscent of Catholic religious artwork. Screw who fell victim to the often celebrated "Purple" and Pat who was shot for his money and possessions ("Gold"). “ -That Purple Bastard

about

Dirty & Nasty Houston

A high octane, highly intellectual Hip Hop duo from Houston, Texas comprised of Dirty Dog D (D3) & OG Nasty Nique (The Texas Chainsaw). These SXSW Converse Rubber Tracks Alumni have ripped the stage from FPSF to the streets of Atlanta during A3C. A laid back style mixed with the coolness of raw power. Sounds like Public Enemy & Run the Jewels meets EPMD on holiday in Rap's New World. ... more
